Fachsprachprüfung - Specialized language exam

Germany needs doctors from abroad. To ensure that they can not only communicate in everyday life, but also with patients and colleagues without misunderstandings, they must pass a so-called Fachsprachprüfung when applying for a license to practice medicine in Germany.
The Fachsprachprüfung includes the simulation of a doctor-patient interview, the written documentation of a patient case and a doctor-doctor interview.
The prerequisite for this is language skills at C1 level.
During the preparation for the Fachsprachprüfung, you will learn different types of communication in a medical context. This means you will learn

  • the “patient language”, i.e. how you talk to patients and their relatives so that they understand what you are saying to them
  • the “care language”, i.e. communication with care staff and
  • the “doctor's or colleague's language” to communicate with other doctors, to take part in consultations or congresses/conferences or to compile written documentation.

Fachsprachprüfung preparation courses

In the preparation course, you will be prepared for the Fachsprachprüfung. Using medical history interviews, conversations with nursing staff or colleagues, writing medical letters and various other situations, you will not only learn the relevant “language”, but also the necessary vocabulary and important phrases. We attach great importance to ensuring that you can communicate fluently and confidently in the respective situation and also work on your pronunciation.
The lessons take place online in a private course. On request, lessons can also be held in small groups of up to three people.

Frequently asked questions

You do not need to register directly for the Fachsprachprüfung. Doctors from abroad who come to Germany to work in their profession must first submit an application for a professional license/approbation. After submitting the application, you will receive a written confirmation of receipt. You can then apply for an examination date at the relevant state medical association.
This procedure varies from state to state. Please enquire with the state medical association responsible for you.
Every doctor who applies for a license to practice medicine or a professional permit and cannot prove that they have the necessary knowledge of German to work as a doctor must take the Fachsprachprüfung.
A Fachsprachprüfung is not necessary if the doctor
  • has a degree from a German-speaking university or,
  • has a degree from a German-speaking school with at least ten years of general school education or
  • has completed at least three years of vocational training in German.

In order to apply for a professional license or license to practice medicine in Germany, you must be able to demonstrate at least level B2 in the general language and C1 in the specialist language for medicine.
In almost all federal states, the specialist language examination is conducted by the state medical association or the district medical association. There are also private providers, but they are recognized differently in each federal state.
The Medinet Academy self-study module contains digital exercises on the subject matter. The exercises are divided in the same way as the modules, but there are additional exercises.
Depending on which module you book with Medinet Academy, the corresponding self-study part is included free of charge. However, it is possible to subscribe to the complete self-study program without booking a module. This is a monthly subscription that is valid until it is canceled.
